How is the tip and split calculated?
The tip is a percentage of the chosen tip base, or a fixed amount you enter directly. The total is the bill plus any tax, any service charge and the tip, and each person's share is that total divided evenly by the number of people.
- total = bill subtotal + tax + service charge + tip
- each person pays = total ÷ number of people
- tip base is your choice: the subtotal, or the subtotal plus tax and service charge
- a bill that already includes tax is not taxed again
- rounding, if chosen, is applied only after this exact calculation
For example, on an £80 bill with a 15% tip calculated on the subtotal, no tax and no service charge: the tip is £80 × 15 ÷ 100 = £12, the total is £80 + £12 = £92, and split between 4 people, each person pays £92 ÷ 4 = £23, of which £3 is their share of the tip.
Tip base, tax and service charge, explained
The tip base is the amount a percentage tip is calculated on. This calculator always shows you the tip base explicitly rather than assuming one, because reasonable people calculate this differently. A service charge or automatic gratuity that a venue has already added is kept separate from any extra tip you choose to leave — the two are never combined without both figures being shown.
How does rounding work?
Rounding is always applied after the exact bill, tip and split have been calculated, never before. Rounding the total or each share up collects a little more than the exact amount owed, and this calculator shows the adjustment. Rounding each share to the nearest whole unit can instead collect slightly less than the bill — this calculator flags that shortfall so you know before you pay.
