Your pay details

£

Your gross pay for one paid hour, before deductions.

Your working pattern
hrs

Use paid working hours, excluding unpaid breaks.

wks

Use 52 if you are paid across the full year, including paid holiday. Reduce this for unpaid leave or seasonal work.

If you are salaried and your annual salary includes paid holiday, 52 paid weeks is usually the appropriate comparison. If you are paid only for weeks worked, or take unpaid leave, use the number of paid weeks you expect to work — such as 50 rather than 52 for two unpaid weeks.

days

Used to estimate daily pay. This does not change annual pay if hours and weeks stay the same.

Overtime and bonus (optional)
hrs

Optional. Include only overtime you expect to work regularly.

×

For example, 1.5 means time-and-a-half. Check your contract or local rules.

£

Optional. Include only predictable annual bonuses or commission.

How to convert hourly pay to annual salary

To estimate annual gross pay from an hourly wage, multiply your hourly rate by your regular paid hours per week and the number of paid weeks in the year.

annual salary = hourly wage × hours per week × paid weeks per year
  • overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours per week × paid weeks
  • total annual pay = regular pay + overtime pay + predictable annual bonus

For a 40-hour schedule paid for all 52 weeks, annual paid hours are 2,080. But if you work 37.5 hours, take unpaid leave, work seasonally or have another arrangement, use your actual paid hours and paid weeks instead.

How to convert salary to hourly pay

Divide annual gross salary by the number of paid hours you work over the year.

hourly equivalent = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
  • contracted-hour equivalent uses regular paid hours only
  • effective hourly rate uses regular hours plus expected overtime

If you regularly work additional unpaid hours, include them to see your effective hourly rate across the time you actually work. This does not determine what an employer legally owes; it is a gross-pay comparison.

If you receive a fixed annual salary that already includes paid holiday, use 52 paid weeks. Taking paid holiday does not normally reduce the annual salary. If you are paid only for time worked, work seasonally or take unpaid leave, reduce the number of paid weeks to reflect the time you expect to be paid.

Is overtime included?

This calculator lets you add expected regular overtime and choose an overtime multiplier. Overtime entitlement and rates depend on the contract, role and location. In the US, covered non-exempt employees generally receive at least time-and-a-half after 40 hours in a workweek under federal law, but exemptions and state rules can matter.

Gross pay vs take-home pay

Gross pay is income before tax and other deductions. Take-home pay can differ because of income tax, payroll taxes/National Insurance, pension contributions, health insurance, student-loan repayments and other deductions. Use the UK Take-Home Pay Calculator or another country-specific take-home-pay calculator for a more complete estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by your paid hours per week and paid weeks per year. For example, $25 per hour for 40 paid hours per week across 52 paid weeks is $52,000 before deductions.

How do I convert annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual gross salary by your paid hours per week multiplied by paid weeks per year. Use your actual working pattern for a more useful comparison.

Is 40 hours per week the standard?

Forty hours across 52 paid weeks is a common full-time comparison assumption and equals 2,080 paid hours per year. But working patterns vary, so use your actual hours and paid weeks for a more useful result.

Should I use 50 or 52 weeks per year?

Use 52 if you are paid throughout the year, including paid holiday. Use fewer weeks if you are paid only for time worked, take unpaid leave or work seasonally.

Does this calculator include overtime?

Yes. You can enter expected regular overtime hours and an overtime multiplier in hourly-pay mode. Overtime is optional and user-defined because contracts and legal entitlement vary. For salaried roles, the calculator can show how regular additional hours affect your effective hourly rate, but it does not assume those hours receive an overtime premium.

Is this gross pay or take-home pay?

It is gross pay before taxes, National Insurance/Social Security, pension, health insurance, student-loan deductions and other withholdings. Use a country-specific take-home-pay calculator for an estimate after deductions.

Why does my monthly pay not exactly match annual salary divided by 12?

The monthly figure is an annual average. Actual paychecks can differ because of pay frequency, unpaid leave, overtime, bonuses, payroll calendars and deductions.

Can I compare job offers with this calculator?

Use it to compare gross-pay equivalents, but consider the full package as well: paid leave, pension or retirement contributions, health insurance, bonuses, job security, commuting costs, overtime expectations and working hours can all change the real value of an offer.
