How to convert litres to gallons
Litre and liter are the same unit — British and American spellings — so this is also how you convert liters to gallons. A UK imperial gallon and a US liquid gallon hold different amounts, so litres convert to each one with its own factor. Divide by the litre capacity of the gallon you want:
- One UK imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres.
- One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres.
Example: convert 50 litres
50 ÷ 4.54609 = 10.99846 UK imperial gallons
50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.20860 US liquid gallons

UK gallons vs US gallons
A UK imperial gallon is larger than a US liquid gallon. One UK imperial gallon equals 4.54609 litres, while one US liquid gallon equals 3.785411784 litres — roughly a 20% difference. Always choose the correct gallon type when converting fuel, containers, recipes, liquids or bulk quantities, because using the wrong one gives an answer that is off by about a fifth.
British spelling is litres and American spelling is liters; they are the same unit. This page uses the SI symbol L in the table so it reads the same either way.
